The region does boast some of the world's most ambitious solar PV projects, such as the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park in Dubai, which has a planned 5GW generation capacity by 2030 from both solar PV and concentrated solar power (CSP).
Saudi Arabia is running its first 8GWh public procurement for BESS resources, while Chinese BESS-specialised battery maker Hithium recently announced plans to build a 5GWh production plant in Saudi Arabia in partnership with Saudi engineering solutions company MANAT as the pair also launched a BESS solution designed for use in desert conditions.
Partnering with EWEC ensures the electricity is fully integrated into Abu Dhabi's distribution network and available to high-demand clients, including data centers driving the AI boom. “This is additive power,” explains Almansouri. “We're not replacing existing supply; we're expanding capacity to meet new demand—the kind being created by AI.
The system's design allows it to discharge stored solar energy overnight or during cloudy periods, providing steady output to the grid. Partnering with EWEC ensures the electricity is fully integrated into Abu Dhabi's distribution network and available to high-demand clients, including data centers driving the AI boom.
Larsen & Toubro and POWERCHINA have been selected as preferred Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) contractors for the project, which will be built in Abu Dhabi.
