Pioneer energy storage system in Fiumicino, Italy
The inauguration of the largest energy storage facility using second-life batteries in Italy marks a turning point in the decarbonization of the Fiumicino airport hub.
View DetailsItaly's largest energy storage system based on used batteries for electric vehicles was inaugurated on Tuesday at Rome's Fiumicino airport to help it reduce carbon emissions.
An additional innovative feature relates to the development of equipment able to check the state-of-health of the batteries before their connection to the system. The energy storage system will have a rated capacity of 2.5MW/10MWh. New battery construction will be avoided due to the project.
The energy storage system with a rated output of 5 MW and a capacity of 10 MWh will be designed, built, put into operation and operated out of used vehicle batteries from different vehicle manufacturers. This has the advantage of reducing procurement risk while increasing the modularity of the system.
Once the project is complete, AdR has already planned to install additional solar PV and storage systems on the same site. The integration of the battery storage sector with other relevant sectors, such as automotive and the energy sector (generation, transmission and distribution) opens new and flexible opportunities.
