Stellantis and CATL have announced plans to jointly build a 4.1 billion euro ($4.3 billion) lithium iron phosphate battery plant in Spain.
Spain is emerging as a strategic hub in Europe's lithium-ion battery value chain, driven by electric mobility, renewable energy storage, and industrial electrification.
CATL first announced the joint venture with Stellantis in December 2024, aiming to establish a large-scale LFP battery production facility in Spain. Construction will involve approximately 2,000 Chinese technical staff and construction workers, followed by the recruitment and training of roughly 3,000 local Spanish employees.
CATL and Stellantis have started constructing a €4.04 billion lithium iron phosphate battery facility in Figueruelas, Spain. The 50 GWh plant, supported by EU funding with 5,000 staff, will supply cells to Zaragoza EVs by late 2026.
