Wednesday, 7th February 2024 Dublin, Ireland – ESB has today opened a major battery plant at its Poolbeg site in Dublin which will add 75MW (150MWh) of fast-acting energy storage to help provide grid stability and deliver more renewables on Ireland's electricity system.
The Dublin Energy Hub, housing the largest battery, serves as a testbed for the future of clean energy in Ireland. It is envisioned as a hub for integrating various green technologies, including offshore wind, hydrogen, and carbon capture and storage, all working together to power a sustainable future for the Emerald Isle.
This latest battery energy storage system (BESS), currently the largest site of its kind in commercial operation in Ireland, is part of ESB's pipeline of projects which are being delivered at sites in Dublin and Cork – representing an investment of up to €300m.
The project at ESB's Poolbeg Energy Hub in Dublin has been in operation since late November 2023. ESB is partnering with US energy storage specialist Fluence Energy Inc and Irish companies Kirby Group and Powercomm Group on delivering the battery portfolio.
The battery is part of a project pipeline, representing an investment of up to EUR 300 million (USD 323m), that ESB is executing at sites in Dublin and Cork in support of Ireland''s climate
