SEB Nordic Energy's portfolio company, Locus Energy, in collaboration with Ingrid Capacity, will build the largest battery energy storage project in the Nordics. The project will add 70 MW/140 MWh of storage capacity to SEB Nordic Energy's Finnish portfolio, which already includes wind and hydropower.
Battery energy storage systems (BESS) continue to play a vital role in the Nordic energy transition. Based on Marsh's experience in advising BESS owners in the Nordics, cold climate challenges, ensuring safety, and optimizing spacing are key topics that are discussed for BESS development in the region.
The project will add 70 MW/140 MWh of storage capacity to SEB Nordic Energy's Finnish portfolio, which already includes wind and hydropower. Located in Nivala Municipality in Finland's Ostrobothnia region, the project is expected to be completed in 2026.
With existing interconnections to the UK, Germany, the Netherlands, Poland, and the Baltics, the Nordic region already serves as a key energy storage provider for the rest of Europe. Many Nordic hydropower plants are upgrading their control systems to improve its responsiveness.
