The Irish Government's Climate Action Plan 2021 set out the need for an energy storage policy for Ireland to support 75% reduction in power sector CO2 emissions by 2030. The policy framework is a first of kind policy, which clarifies the key role of electricity storage in Ireland's transition to an electricity-led system, supporting Irelands 2030 climate targets, it may be considered as a steppingstone on Ireland's path to net zero carbon emissions.
In this regard, greater emphasis is placed on ensuring 'long duration' electricity storage systems – systems that have the capacity to deliver electricity throughout at least a four-hour period – are integrated into Ireland's electricity grid.
Storage technologies are already playing an important role in supporting the electricity system in Ireland. The combined storage capacity currently connected to the grid in Ireland is approximately 792MW. This consists of approximately 500MW lithium-ion batteries, with an average duration of less than one hour, providing system services.
