Diversifying the country''s energy sources and modernizing the energy sector is a top priority for the Government of Senegal, as outlined in Senegal''s ambitious Emerging Senegal Plan.
View DetailsConstruction of the battery energy storage system is expected to commence in early 2024 at the Tobène substation in Thies and is expected to become operational in 2025. Once complete, it will be one of the largest of its kind in West Africa, and will help Senegal to avoid approximately 37,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions each year.
Expected to be one of the lowest cost producers of electricity in Senegal, the project is helping reduce the cost of electricity generation in the country, which has one of the highest generation costs in Sub-Saharan Africa. About Infinity Power Infinity Power is Africa's largest pure play renewable energy provider.
Senelec owns 15%, while West African Energy controls the remaining 85%. The project, located near Dakar, will use indigenous gas, potentially reducing Senegal's power rates. Turbines are supplied by General Electric, while engineering and construction are handled by Calik Enerji. Sendou – 125 MW
Phase One's 16 turbines began supplying 50 MW of electricity to Senegal's grid in December 2019, while additional phases since July 2021 add 108 MW, increasing the country's electricity supply by 15 percent.
